@Malte To achieve strong sales on Kleinanzeigen, professional sellers must consider several key factors based on buyer behavior, competition, and platform dynamics. Here’s my ranking of the most relevant aspects:
(i) Price: Buyers come to Kleinanzeigen seeking the best price. If your prices aren’t the cheapest, they’ll turn to specialized marketplaces or retailers’ websites. Offering the best price is crucial.
(ii) Trust & Professionalism. Building trust is essential: Every aspect of your seller profile must reflect pure professionalism, ensuring buyers feel confident purchasing from you. Buyers evaluate Pro sellers based on:
Ratings
Number of followers
Number of active and historical listings
Quality & quantity of product photos
Detailed and transparent descriptions
Clear terms and conditions
(iii) Payment Methods
PayPal is King; preferred by buyers because the seller covers the transaction fee, making it cost-free for them. Since price is the most critical factor, buyers may favor sellers who offer PayPal over more bureaucratic payment systems like Kleinanzeigen’s in-house payment system (OPP), who (on top) requires buyers to submit sensitive documents like their ID and a bank statement, which discourage many transactions.
Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen fewer than 0.01% of buyers asking if they could pay through Kleinanzeigen’s system, highlighting a strong preference for alternative payment methods.
Trends from Other Adevinta Platforms
If you’ve sold on other Adevinta Group marketplaces, you can anticipate similar patterns on Kleinanzeigen:
Willhaben (Austria): When PayLivery was introduced, the rating system changed. Now buyers can only leave reviews if they use PayLivery.
Leboncoin (France): Sellers who don’t use Leboncoin’s payment system face higher fees (i.e. for fashion 14% instead of 9% per sale).
Kleinanzeigen’s new owners are financial speculators focused on maximizing the platform’s value for a future sale. Increasing revenue is crucial to achieving that. Given trends in other Adevinta Group marketplaces, it’s highly likely that Kleinanzeigen will extend its in-house payment system to Pro sellers. When this happens, sellers who choose not to adopt it may face penalties, such as higher fees, no ratings or reduced visibility.
In my opinion, the platform has much more important and worrying problems for Professional users than the payment method; but I have no doubt that when this is implemented, we will suffer new technical issues and a new slowdown of activity and sales.
